Guys dont buy a n810 so soon... wait until the release atleast.... i suspect this thing is going to be sweet. I have been using the n810 since the last year and it is frustrating to use 2.5 year old hardware in this age...
Just hold on a little longer.

Was with AT&T for about a year. Never had a contract since then, only paying for actual usage. Changed provider a couple of times over the last 5 years.

I think I would suggest the same - hold on if you can. I don't think you will be terribly dissapointed by the new device and in particular Fremantle on the new device.
If Sachin is now ON-BOARD and enthusiastic (he was one of the vocal opponent to a smaller Maemo device), I think many more will be including yourself (as will be myself too).
And if the RX-71 tablet comes out later you can move forward again.
So patience is the best virtue.

Hmm, I wonder if there is a *reason* for the black Fremantle...

How normal do you think that is that people don't have a contract in the US? The PAYG crowd are a minority in the US.
And despite having an iPhone, I didn't commit to a 2 year contract either - but I have an inside connection, so I'm not normal either.

It may depend on the demographic and geography. Anecdotally, I'm noticing more and more young adults going to pay-as-you go once they're off mom and dad's plan. Longterm plans by large providers only really make sense these days under certain conditions, such as a need to travel, conduct business, etc. I'd wager most 20-somethings don't need anything more than PaYG... and if so, the numbers will reflect that soon enough.
