Thanks. I have followed the instructions but it stalls once ive added it with the information. It says 'checking for updates, please wait' and gives me the stop option which I have to use because nothing happens.

(Just a shot in the dark here) Anyone know why on a celluar connection my vnc session gets dropped after being connected only for a few seconds, but on wi-fi it could last for ever?

One of the problems I suspect is I currently have RealVNC set to prefer on for encryption, and I think it might help to be prefer off. One other issue I'm having is if the internet connection is not active for 5 minutes the router kills the connection. Since no one is at the server to make the connection active again, that is another problem (which I will remedy by telling the router to keep the connection live, in the future this wont be neccessary as the box will be made to download legit torrents, etc., and thus will always use the internet.)

Anybody more experienced at this than me have any suggestions?

I have made a couple of youtube videos, where you can see these remote desktop applications in action:

- rdesktop v.1.7-maemo1:

- VNC viewer v.0.6.3-fremantle2:

rdesktop works great for me when connecting within lan (from 192.168.0.11 to 192.168.0.10), but when I try to connect with lets say gprs to my WAN IP, it won't work and I kinda guess it shouldn't work either to keep things safe.
So my question is, how do I connect to my PC that's behind nat from outside my lan?

edit: I booted my box and now it works for some reason. Great

And also, do I have to set up something on the PC before connecting the phone to it or just connect to the local IP?

As far as I know, only the Windows 7 Professional and the Ultimate version can act as an RDP server.

And also, do I have to set up something on the PC before connecting the phone to it or just connect to the local IP?
Check that you have enabled the remote desktop in "System properties -> Remote -> Remote desktop", and that the remote user's account is in "Remote desktop Users". Windows firewall rules are automatically created, but if you have a third party firewall (software and/or hardware), you'll need to verify that the firewall rules are set to allow the remote desktop connection.

If you want to connect over the Internet, you'll need to know your WAN IP address (if you don't have a static IP, then a dyndns type service is recommended). If you are behind a NAT router, you will also need to configure port forwarding rule on your router (default RDP port is TCP 3389).

It's of course also possible to use the remote desktop through a VPN tunnel.
