Penguinbait and the General have often given valuable advice here. However, in this case I don't think they understand the uncertainty the old man is facing. He is asking about the N810. Penguinbait stated

"This does not list the N810, I do not know if it is compatible. I do not have an n810 yet, nor do I have a mac." So the old man still does not have a pointer to instructions for (macosx AND N810).

The old man knows that a new flasher 3 is required for (linux AND N810). He cannot find anything to suggest that the old flasher-2 would work for (macosx AND N810). He has probably read here that one user thought flashing had trashed his internal card including his passport. So he is concerned and still seeks information. i too have read and still cannot find the information.

The best place for this is in the obvious place in the wikis. As I have commented previously, it would be very helpful if someone with experience could edit the maemo wiki or the ITT wiki. I have left a hook for this in the new FAQ problems and solutions section of the ITT wiki.
The absence of any responses suggests that the attempt is lethal.

(I just grepped '810' on the maemo wiki page for flashing the latest software using macosx and found nothing.)

One sentence, informed by experience, added to the wiki would save all the readers of ITT a lot of needless reading in future. Sentence added after inital post.

If I have missed it on the wiki, please let me know.

This reply is for oldmancoyote1 who asked about flashing the N810 on his Mac.

1. Download flasher utility for MacOS X and the N810 firmware image:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/d3.php?...her-2.0.macosx

http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N...ED_MR0_ARM.bin

2. Open a terminal and change to the directory where you installed the flasher utility. Run the following command to make the flasher utility executable:
Code:
chmod +x flasher-2.0
3. Now we flash the firmware:
• N810: Unplug charger and switch off the Nokia N810. Connect the tablet to your computer via USB
• Mac: Execute as root (or as a normal user with rights to use the USB port):
Code:
sudo ./flasher-2.0.macosx -F RX-44_2008SE_1.2007.42-19_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R
• Mac: "Suitable USB device not found, waiting" is displayed on the console
• N810: Now plug in the charger to switch on the N810 or switch it on using the power button WHILE holding the Home-button (Press the center of the large button on the front left of the screen)
• Mac: Watch the messages as the image loads to the N810 after which it reboots automatically -- you're done now!

4. If you want to put the tablet into R&D mode run the following command:
Code:
sudo ./flasher-2.0.macosx --enable-rd-mode
When R&D mode is enabled
• you can use sudo gainroot to get a root shell on the device
• the power button turns the device on instantly (usually you have to keep it pressed for a while)

I am still missing what instructions are needed, you download the flasher and you flash it. If you run the flasher without any args it will tell you how to use it. As for flasher , it was in the first link I gave? Did I spell out exactly what steps to do, no, I did not think hand holding was required.

At some point you need to make that first leap off the building and hope your just dreaming.

Here is an example:
./flasher.macosx -F Nokia_770_0.2005.45-8.bin -f -R

good luck, you must understand that this is a new peice of hardware and many documents and software packages have not been updated yet. The other problem is the people best able to help you do not have n810's yet so they do not have the experience to tell you anything. But I guess we were at least trying to help. If anyone feels my answers are not useful, please by all means ignore me.

I am still not exactly sure what the issue is, did he download the flasher for macos and try to flash his device? Did it not work?

The problem is he is perhaps the first person trying to do something, and he is looking for exact instructions, guess what , you need to write em, and add them to the wiki, and btw someone who has been working with computers since the beginning of unix should be used to pushing the envelope a little.

All this said perhaps I am just not understanding the major issue, and being a prick, it would not be the first time, and most certainly be the last

I found penguinbait's reply accurate. His second link shows what to do. Perhaps if "the old man" had purchased penguinbait an 810 it could have been tested.
I did not start programming (in Cobol) until 1971, and never used Unix until 1983. So if I told a user that something WOULD work without testing it myself I would be lying.

I've found that some people, like my children, say they have searched forever, but they either do not know how to or where to search.

That sounds like an N800. On the N810 it looks like it would be the Swap button (top button of the two buttons to the left of the screen).

But I don't have an N810, just going by a picture.

You didn't think, yes.

I knew exactly what he was trying to do, and gave him the tools he needs to do it. Assume whatever you want, but both penguinbait's and my information was useful and relevant.

Hi,
and thanks for understanding the real problem. I found my way to here, as the official files and instructions at the mentioned url's were exactly the same as had been with previous releases of the internet tablet platform. So, the flasher programs might just as well be just out-of-date.

A minor correction, on N810 the HOME-button is the center of the large button on the front left of the keyboard.

For those who are still (imho, deservedly) dubious about the upgrade process, as it's always easy to make your device a brick with flashers, here's my upgrade log:

Code:
$ sudo ./flasher-2.0.macosx -F nokia_N810.php -f -R --enable-rd-mode

For some reason, my browser saved the downloaded file as 'nokia-810.php'. Well, this is he first time I seem to be flashing a php program to an embedded device .

Hi,
I tried upgrading to 52_2 from ubuntu feisty using flasher-3.0.
I followed the procedure in maemo.org but did not know which the Home button for N810 is. I tried the ones mentioned in this thread but without success. Here is what I got:

vj@vj-laptop:~/n810$ sudo ./flasher-3.0 RX-44_2008SE_2.2007.50-2_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f -R
flasher v0.8.7 (Oct 17 2006)

Suitable USB device not found, waiting
USB device found found at bus 001, device address 022
Found device RX-44, hardware revision 0801
NOLO version 1.1.6
Version of 'sw-release': <no version>
vj@vj-laptop:~/n810$

I think "About Product" started to show <unknown> for Version after my first unsuccessful attempt.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Well, I succeed after carefully reading the post. I had missed the "-F" option on the flasher command! Obviously I can't read .

Thanks for all the helpful posts.
