I'd been trying to download the maps for days with no luck, copying over from the SD card did the trick.
But this is for folks like moi who don't have the Navicore SD, nor could get the maps from whatever download site the N800 steering us towards.

The failed downloads on the IT installs a Navicore license to your SD that enables you to use the downloaded maps from the Navicore site.

Now whether these will work with the activated wayfarer update, I dunno.

Ah, well, that makes sense. It's what you get for living out away from all the noise and bustle of a metropolitan area.

a) does it matter if the card is external vs internal and is it possible to switch?
b) also i have most maps downloaded as archive from Navicore before, but extracting it into map folder didn't do the trick. what else could i be missing? thx

a. Dunno. I used the external. I was ready to throw it out the window at the time.

b. What I did was extract the .tar to a folder, grab the mapdata_whatever folder, and drag just that folder to the map foolder on the SD. This was on a Vista machine. I had to play around with the location in the map folder. I first tried putting the Navigon stuff on theSD, but it was already there from the failed downloads. Then I tried various locations in the map folder on theSD. But, in the end, it worked when I just put it in the main folder.

Don't know about anyone else, but my N800 does NOT like this site. Y'all gots some serious scripting problems, bro.

thanks. i'm still working on it...

so if i understand correctly if you download more than one region/country it renames the folders depending on which one you're selecting at the time? the folder for the one selected gets renamed to "mapdata" and the other downloaded ones become "mapdata_xyz"? and if you select "xyz" as a current region it renames other folder?

Correct! What I've been leaving out is that I started dozens of downloads on my N800 the "correct" way and everyone stalled at various points. I looked at the stuff that the Wayfinder site put on my SD card and it matched the information that some folks on here said was the info which they had on their Navicore DVD or SD--right down to the name Navicore and the string of digits for DRM stuff. So, I figured (correctly) that if I now had Navicore DRM data, I could borrow their maps too.

When I first downloaded the map data, I tried putting the entire folder downloaded from the Navicore site in the folder that already existed on the SD card (placed there by the failed downloads) named "mapdata" and it wouldn't work.

By the time I discovered the correct method--just the Navicore "mapdata" folder (not the Navicore DRM junk- you already have it--Wayfinder gave it to you) and the correct location--just put it inside the "map" folder the failed downloads placed on your SD--I forgot everything.

So I went back inside my now working SD card and WTF the folder mapdata_USA West was gone. Its name was changed and the info dumped into your failed download's "mapdata" folder. That's why you DON'T put the folder there first. It does it for you upon startup.

A lot of work to try to circumvent a too narrow intertube, no?

i think i finally got it. whew. even restored me old favorite locations, apparently it's just a text file with coordinates so fairly easy to pre-load with others by hand.

has anyone noticed "mapdata_Atlantis" among other map folders? where's the feet?

I'm posting the way I found to install the map (Italy in my case) in the external sd.

I've an internal sd with 2 partition. The n800 see the 300mb one. The external is 8gb large.

After activating wayfinder (with the license of the n700 navicore pack), I tried to download the Italy map from the menu but fails.
Then I deleted all the "map" directory both from internal and external sd.
I launched wayfainder and in the internal sd the "map" folder was created again.
I moved the "map" folder from the internal to the external sd.
Then I lanched wayfinder again and download the Italy map succesfully.

When the map was downloaded wayfinder create a directory under "map" named "mapdata_ITALY". When the installation was completed the "mapdata_ITALY" was renamed "mapdata" and the old "mapdata" folder (the default directory that wayfinder created at first launch) was renamed "mapdata_Atlantis".

That's all.

I downloaded and extracted the maps from Navicore. Took the folder mapdata_USA West and pasted it to the folder "map" created on my SD card by all the failed download attempts and viola, we've got map.
Thanks. I had already downloaded USA_West and this method worked nicely for USA_East. I used winrar to unzip the tar.gz file in windows.

Hello,

After not having any luck trying to download maps directly onto my N800/OS 2008 I downloaded the map file USA_West_2007_3.tar.gz
(681MB) from Navicore to my Windows PC.

I then transferred that file into the "map" folder on my SDHC 4GB card which had the "map" etc. folders already on it and put the card into the internal slot. That's all that is on the card.

According to previous posts in this forum I believe this was the correct method.

However, the map file does not show in the Maps in device tab in the Map application.

I also tried to open the map file by selecting it and when asked which application I wanted to open it with I selected the Map application. That didn't work.

I then came across the quote below and I don't understand the part about "I used winrar to unzip the tar.gz file".

I didn't think that the map file that I downloaded from Navicore had to be unzipped.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.
