I have no idea what I'm going to use, but I've been reading around (AVS is where I've started) and will be doing as much reading as I can. Is there a free version of CQC I can use and try. I don't think I have anything else in my home to control but would like to experiment with light switches and stuff. Does ZWave stuff work and how much does it cost to implement? Anything I do will have to be either free or very cheap at first. I've spent too much on my xbox's and the 800 now to do too much right away. I'll be in the 800 forums checking everything out as soon as i arrives.

sic0048-feel free to post links to any other forums about intro to home automation...very intro to HA.

Thanks,

J

There is a demo of the full CQC software, but it only lasts 30 or 60 days. Hardly enough time to really test it out. However, I will say that I don't regret getting it at all. I use it mainly for audio/video control in my house. I serve music, radio, DVDs and SageTV recordings all over my house. I have a couple of permanent touchscreens around the house, but I also have a N800 and N770 that I use as a portable wireless touchscreen. It's great when I'm outside or in a room without a permanent touchscreen.

I'd continue reading about the different systems. Go to each website and ask questions on their forums. (CQC is http://www.charmedquark.com/vb_forum/index.php). I think you'll learn a lot just from doing that. Only download the software when you have enough equipment in the house to be able to test it adequately.

I use the same name in several forums (CQC, AVS, here, etc) so it should be easy to spot me. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Good luck.
