The EEEs are nice, but have a severe drawback for me: too small to be really useful as a laptop replacement, too big to be a real N800 replacement...

In fact, as someone already pointed out, those two devices have different targets...so we cannot really compare them...

Same as ^^. The only reason for buying one myself I can think of is if I needed to do lots typing while traveling.

How does this all compare to the new ACER thing, the small one like the eeePC? Sorry, cannot remember the name, something with an Intel atom inside and 8.9 in screen

Don't know about the acer but just do search for netbooks, that is the general name for these kind of computers. There are at least 10 different brands with these things now (MSI, HP).

Anybody has one? and how does it measure to the eeePC? $249 certainly going to give eeePC a run

I think i already did similar comparison before, but here it goes again:

Acer Aspire One vs Eee 901 - 2200 mAh vs 6600, no BT vs BT (Aspire doesn't even have BT support compiled in the original kernel, so USB BT is a no go too, dunno if they fixed it), 802.11b/g vs 802.11b/g/n, 8.9″ vs 8.9″ (Aspire has ClearBrite - i think its transflexive), 8GB SSD vs 20GB SSD. 512MB upgradeable to 1.5GB (hard to access it, you have to remove the whole mainboard) vs 1GB upgradeable to 2GB (easily accessible), Aspire has better keyboard, 901 has better touchpad with dual touch gestures.

I think 901 wins by quite a number and 1000 is a clear and undisputable winner (bigger and with better keyboard than the above two)

Yes, I would say that the umpc is far from dead; in fact, I expect it to hit its peak in a few months and to be around for a long, long time.

As far as the Aspire One and bt support: There is at least one very enthusiastic modder posting pictures of how to add bt to the motherboard -- since it doesn't have "support" for bt, are you saying that she is forgetting to mention that bt doesn't work after the mod? I suspect it can be made to work fairly easily. What about installing a different version of Linux and just using a bt dongle, for example? And in your comparison you forgot to mention price -- is that not a consideration?

funny thing is that it seems the mid, umpc and small formfactor tablet pc's are more or less the same, with only artificial seperations.

take the fujistsu u2010:

atom, 5" screen.

slap some linux on it and you could call it a netbook or a mid. but as its supposed to run vista, its a umpc...

its a war of words thats kindergarden like...

No, i said there's no support in the official kernel (the one that comes with the netbook). Of course it can be recompiled with BT switched on or a simple update from Acer (they probably switched it on, i can't imagine why they wouldn't if it was a mistake) would be sufficient.

from what i could gather of the aspireoneuser.com forum, the kernel support is there, but the distro do not come with any of the bluez packages installed.

ones those are in place, one can use bluetooth just fine.
