I use UltraVNC and it works fine.
Of course the VNC port (default 5900) should be open on your Windows box , check Windows Firewall, and when you are controlling it externally, the port 5900 should be forwarded to the internal IP address of the N810.
Another option is rDesktop or pyDesktop an RDP client for N810.
Then the settings apply to port 3389.
Note: For Viste Home Premium you need a patch to use the PC as a RDP server and XP home does not support RDP-in at all.
