I typed them over or cut and paste from the imported txt files where possible.

People say that the contacts can be imported if you export them to csv, I tried several times and various ways but it has not worked for me.

The memo was the other big dissapointment. While Palm OS seems to have the memo in a database structure. I use Notes on the N810 and that uses a file system structure. So while on the TX I would open memo and immediately see the records/notes listed and can go to any note by clicking on it. On Notes I have to open Notes, then browse for the file within a folder that contains the note I am looking for.

Perhaps there is another application that does a better replacement for Memo but I don't know of it.

Gpe calendar is the calendar; erminig does syncing to google calendar. Work very well. You can also have a gpe todo and gpe summary (for a nice synthesis of calendar and todo list on your desktop).

Search the forums for installation and use cases.

I only managed to export Contacts from Palm Desktop and it required extensive bash scripts processing csv fields. The Palm Desktop & Evolution fields just do not map.

Also, Evolution syncing with GPE is full of bugs. I lost nearly 90% of my contacts data after the first opensync, including, but not limited to, residential addresses and all phone numbers. Probably my fault since I used non-usual Evolution fields for storing data as a result of my custom importer.

Gpe-calendar contains also some bugs which may or may not be showstoppers for you. Syncing repeating events which span DST shifts is nearly impossible. I've been woken up at 3:00 a.m. a lot of times due to shifts accumulating after each sync. Awful. Forget about any kind of "complex" repeating event rules like the PalmOS had -- GPE and Evolution each treat those in their own incompatible ways.

They were right when they told me that N810 was not a PIM device. Fortunately, seqretary and some recent PIM developments may change that. But they're still not even feature complete.

I would NOT argue on that. I conceed it is an acceptable status at this stage of gvm. However, as bad as it look it is very usable, provide as rlauzon put it above, Not usable if you rely on it.

I have my 20 years contacts and transferred over gvm via sync without a glitch. Yup, over several thousands of contacts. And so far, gvm is till the most easy/reliable transport I have seen on the tablet, so does other palm apps. About crashing and losing all data, have been solved with saving ALL PIM stuff on SD, gvm can crash and NO lost of one bit of data, so far. A bit more details, sync is kind of one way though, only desktop to gvm.

Try :
Conboy (under developement, seems to work OK) has linking between notes.
Quicknote has categories.
NoteCase (from Sourceforge) is more advanced with a tree-structure.
They all have good search functions.

1. Latest version of GVM is much more stable than previous. After first round of experiments, trying software etc. when your usage paths will stabilize you should get very rare crashes. And yes, you will not be able to use some applications or features.

2. Resco Backup. Because Schedules aren't working you have make backups manually but even with this inconvenience it still beats *anything* else on Maemo in PIM area - unfortunately.

3. No syncing

A cautionary note on Erminig - the synch with Google Calendar breaks under real world conditions such as repeating appointments with edited incidents. I have found it unusable in practice.

The ITT really needs a Calendar capability with robust synching to support PIM functionality.

Unfortunately, the tablet-modified ToDos getting not pushed is only one of the many problems I had with it. The next one: try a whole year day-repetition event spanning DST changes. Next: try a repeating event with an end date. Then try to sync a contact image. Then ....
