I used front camera with amsn app, video quality was acceptable but amsn was very slow in use, so i've removed it and now i use pidgin.
I think front camera will work better with future apps/firmware.

I wouldn't be surprised if the front camera won't be supported with Skype.. ever. Just as with the N810. Had a front camera, Skype support nevert came for it. Not really Nokia's fault, but they should be kicking the Skype developers' *** to get it functional. But I read it somewhere that Skype uses some specific algorithm for video calls that would require too much from a phone's hardware. I call BS on it though.

I did a test videocall from a notebook to the n900 via googletalk. Worked pretty well and the camery seems to produce much better pictures then in the mirror app.
I haven't found a way to initiate a videocall yet, though.

I didn't do anything, i just initiated a videocall from the notebook and could answer it as expected on the n900, video went both ways...
As client on the Notebook side i used Ubuntu 9.10's empathy, which uses the telepathy stack just like maemo.

Pidgin seems to see the video camera device, I just dont know what service pidgin supports video with to test it with... If anyone knows, so far I've tried MSN, AIM, and Jabber (XMPP) with no success. The request always immediately terminates stating the other client doesn't understand the protocol request.

I can confirm that while receiving a gtalk call a button appears to enable the webcam. Works good, i could see thee image from the other party and they could seem me. If the call is initiated from the n900 there is no button to activate the camera.
