Just run "tracker-process --hard-reset" from an X Terminal, which will stop the indexer process and delete the stored index data. Then open Media player/Photos to restart the indexer process. It'll then take a while to reindex (it should pop up an alert telling you how long left to complete).

Ah, so it is I just took the first result from the search - should have double checked with the others.

Well, that worked .... at least it re-indexed the files BUT the missing ones never did reappear, and the number of images I can see in the DCIM folder via xterminal still do not correspond to the number of images in the photo application. So, what now????
