The OS is already pre-emptive, and I've done multi-threaded stuff myself, both high-level (run loops) and low-level (manual sync), and I took a glance at most of the new calls. If I read things correctly, there are hooks to run your own code in what I assume are background threads, not just calls for passing grunt work off to a background thread with a specific function. Also, and again if I read things correctly, they might have extended the abilities of the notification callbacks beyond the 3 canned alert choices. Regardless, unlike the latest Sony PS3 fiasco, things seem to have gotten better, not worse. Just how much better I'm not sure I care at the moment; Maemo 5 has more to offer than I can handle right now.

The true power drain of 'multitasking' depends on what the background apps are doing. If you just load 50 apps that does nothing, all they do is drain your swap space.

The 3GS and N900 has very similar spec. Cortex A8 with 1300-ish mah power source, similar sized screen, wifi and 3g. So they have similar 'power drain' centers.
Yes, S60 have few similar service that can run in background, like the music player, calls, etc. Some apps can run in background too, back when I'm using Nokia 6600, the 3rd party MP3 player app can work in background.

The OS4 might have more services and possibly better management of the resources.

Of course it's the best. Because it hides everything from the user.
It's the best for their user.

Job claims the user don't need to worry about closing any app in the "task-switcher" (because it can't), and user don't need task manager.

For a normal user, that sounds fantastic because the OS is so smart.
It's just like a dumb terminal for specific user, or giving a user to "GUEST" account, with many features turned off (like Task Manager). In a way, they say user don't have to worry; But the truth is the other way round, Apple don't have to worry. It's just like I've said, admin give the user only "GUEST" account access and very limited functionality, so admin tell user that they don't have to worry, but in actual fact, it's admin don't have to worry about the user.

Then comes JB for iPhone, where some users tries to obtain "Administrators" account.

i think you need to look into this more
majority of apps will pause and resume upon opening new one in OS4 . there is no support for background multitasking in apps like twitter or IM
Its all based around push notifications and local notifications

from engadget
11:22AM We just asked Steve and co. about the lack of anything that can keep track of a timeline for something like a Twitter or IM app. Scott says that the new save states for applications will be much better than the current situation. Steve also said that they stand behind push notifications and still think it's the right choice for this platform. Then we asked about widgets or glanceable information and why it hasn't been implemented on this platform or the iPad. "Apple sort of pioneered the idea of glanceable information like widgets and it seems to me you've gone to great lengths to avoid something like that in this new OS. Can you tell me a little bit about why you've decided that? With something like the iPad, it seems perfect opportunity where you have a lot of real estate." Steve: "We shipped on Saturday, and rested on Sunday." (lots of laughs) We pressed and asked if it was possible. Steve: "Anything is possible."

anything not audio, VOIP or GPS will not multitask like you think like the keywords in this picture show.

The key is how to talk your way out and make others believe.
Just like how Jobs talk about the stylus and task manager, simple users will believe and take their words easily, when in fact, it's because they can't do it or they don't want to give such feature, thus they come up with their superb skills in manipulation and twisting their way around. Man, they're great and so many people take their word for it.

On the topic of "task completion." Plenty of these calls are of the type: "Do this task and when complete call this handler." Who supplies the handler? You do. There's lots of these new app-supplied handler calls, and you only need that one.

Okay, I did the proper thing. I read the documentation, not just the API reference. I legally can't post anything here, but big brother background tasks are supported. You have to ask for them (an app can have more than one), they have to be granted, and there is a time limit returned with the grant. You also supply a handler that gets called upon either type of completion. But as NvyUs mentioned, you can declare your app as one of the special types, but the benefits seem only relevant to those functions.

Just more fancy lockdown. I'm done for now; back to interesting Maemo hacking.
