Hmm... For $350 I got a WIFI phone, a web browser, a camera, a sound recorder, an email device, a game player, a nice calender and contact list, an MP3 player, the possibility for Rhapsody if I am willing to pay the monthly fee and more. I'd much rather have a device like this that uses WIFI for phone rather than some costly service. You might send your comments to Nokia. I don't know what we are to do with them. I think Nokia will successfully improve an already great device.

People really need to start clarifying what they mean by "Java support", and not respond to people who don't expand on what they mean.

"Java support" to me means the ability to write some kind of app for the device in Java. Ideally, *on* the device for testing algorithms/doing some dev on the train. This is in the works.

"Java support" to others means Java SE support. This is done to a certain degree already, but not very polished/quick or stable.

"Java support" can also mean using the Jazelle extensions for quick execution of Java. Not happening without Nokia/ARM/TI/....

"Java support" to other means midlet/Java PE/ME support: the ability to use all the apps from their mobile phone. This is also in the works.

However, I suspect the biggest group of people mean "Java support" to mean Java applets in the web browser. We're nowhere near that happening, if it's even possible - it's practically dependent on all the things above plus a whole lot more.

As for current Flash-- the world ain't ended yet. Hang on.
I won't hold my breath for that. I'll be *very* surprised (with no empirical knowledge unlike yourself) to see Flash 9 in any ITOS 2007 release.

Edit: OK, I was surprised :-)

Tried it, doesnt work... Not a "real" implementation of Java Virtual Machine for web applications.
Its a limitation of the web browser. Get me a browser that does Java VM and we can talk...

Like I said, I have very specific needs for this device and the N800 doesnt fit the bill - YET. Maybe in the near future, but im not betting on Nokia updating it anytime soon. Im looking at a UMPC that fits a simular form factor.

My needs: My company has proprietary Network Monitoring applications we have ported over to Java. These applications allow for a lot of remote management and monitoring of all our servers - and no VNC doest fit the bill.

ahh..now there's an idea...
I got my N800 for remote network management too...
so I rdesktop in or vnc in...and use the browser on the client machine to manage the network hardware that is java-centric.

works great...just need to add more wireless access points

I think few devices have 800 x 480 screen resolution. No PocketPC, Palm nor iPhone have it. This is a really great feature to surf the web and read ebooks. Currently the N800 doesn't have some features, but since it is a new device it will certainly have all of them.

I won't received mine until next monday, but, as a developer, I am sure I will get a lot of juice from this device.

Ok, just as Andrew noted, it helps to be specific. I hear you on that one: I'd like to see the same thing.

Um, I have searched this forum and can not find anything that indicates Nokia is working on anything, let alone JAVA...

If your talking about members outside of Nokia or Sun's recent interest then maybe.
I hope your not talking about the many "I know something but I can't tell... but if you search you will find hints." stuff.

That does no one any good... and if you are rebutting a statement with a fact, a link to a post would help a lot more than just "search".

Particularly a person who (like most of us) budgets their discretionary spending.

Basically, if you bought the N800 and it doesn't do what you need it to do, return it while you still can. No one here can honestly say that Nokia will or will not support any particular future features.

It is what it is, and for now... that's all that it is.

I actually contacted Nokia before purchase to see if Java was supported, and ofcourse they said "Yes, you be able to see java from within Opera". I figured he was wrong but would give it a try anyway.

By the way, did you know they block you from using port 70!!!!
