Sounds like bang for the buck, a 770 is my way to go.

Having that bedside and portable web browser does hold more importance than video (I can always use the iPod for that... or a television ).

What you are looking to do the 770 is your best bet and you can play video on the 770, although it requires some extra work. See http://maemo.org/maemowiki/VideoEncoding

The 770 at $140 with FBReader is the greatest ebook reader on the market today. Lightweight, easy to carry, excellent screen, plenty of storage and a wonderful (powersaving) slip cover, what's not to love.

I was surprised by the clarity of the screen. It really is excellent. One of the reasons I bought the 770 was to use it as an ebook reader. With FB Reader, it is superb for that purpose.

Also surprised by the audio quality of MP3 playback.

Thanks for all of the great responses. As you can see by the length of time between posts, I have been poring over info here.

My last question is simple. At this point, my big contemplation is whether to pick up the 770 or spring for an 800. The ridiculously low price is what drew me in (costs less than any single pair of my wife's jeans...). But after reading everything, the shininess of the 800 (SD card, wired mic, RAM, etc...) is now enticing me to spend more than double!

I will sleep on it.... twice. No one ships on Sundays anyway

I ended up purchasing 2 nokia 770's. One for me, one for my wife. I'm going to be selling her 770 as she doesn't use it all that often and I think that I'm going to pick up a N800.

The 770 is really nice, and does have the greatest bang for the buck, but with the continued development of the N800 I really want to go that way.

There are a few features that the N800 has that the 770 wont ever get.

Well, I decided to stop window shopping and bought a new in box 770 from a fellow forum member yesterday.

Once it arrives, I guess I can reply to my own question...

Thanks everyone.
