I would say the method last posted by myself (some 4 posts up I think) is the easiest one. It requires that you have osso-xterm and becomeroot installed, however. It won't break your n800.

As a matter of fact I'm not entirely sure what metalayer-crawler does.. or rather, what it's good for.. I'm pretty certain it's about looking all over the cards to find media files which can be indexed in advance for the media player or maybe also some other applications, or something to that extent.

However, I can still use both the media player and the photo application after I disabled the crawler.. go figure. In any case, personally I hate the concept, I much prefer to have a standard normal file browsing feature in the applications and look up what I want to access that way.

CONFIRMED !

I have my 128mb SD card that shipped with the device formatted to ext2. If the card is inserted metalayer-crawler max's my cpu nonstop. I killed the process by PID three times only to have it instantly respawn.

Upon shutting down and restarting the device metalayer-crawler goes right to sleep as it should.

This is killing my device at an alarming rate.
I highly suggest you just remove the binary all together, or at least rename and restart.

I bet this can kill SD cards as well.
I'll report back on my battery life after fixing this.
As it stands im only getting 4 horus of use from a full chage. Highest it sates is 6 hours.

I was wondering what was eating my battery.
Thanks for the instructions Ta-t3.

I'm thinking of adding 'Death to all crawlers' to my .sig.. I hate always-on file system crawlers, and all kind of crawlers on battery-driven and flash-using devices. The whole idea of such crawlers is bad, IMO.

this has not been an issue for me...yet...but like the pointless indexer in Windows I put an end to the metalayer-crawler for now. So thanks to everyone for the topic and answers.

I notice when I insert my 4GB ext2 card, metalayer-crawler turns into a CPU vampire and slows everything down... so it's the file system, eh? interesting.

Renamed the li'l b*stard! Good night, don't come back.

I find this thread rather funny because my crawler has now stopped working for the second time after ( with someone's help here) I fixed the problem using xterm.
So I am struggling to keep mine working and you all apparently are trying to stop it from doing it's thing. So, I assume you are not using the native Media Player. Are you using Canola? Something else that you can easily add your music to?

Neil

Edit: OK, I see that Canola has a refresh function to refresh media rather than using
a "Crawler" But I find it hard if not impossible to confirm which of my tunes Canola has in it's libraries. I'd love to just find a better music player.

@sungrove - Canola should call "refresh" on launch so if you don't see the tune you want in the Canola library, go check the ID3 tags on the media file itself.

@RestOfThread - I've had this happen to me once, after downloading a file, but a shutdown and reboot cured it and it hasn't come back yet. If it does, I'll delete the bugger
