So really, it's nothing new. It's what we make out of it.
I'm just glad they are still going to release it and not kill it off.
if it is keyboard less, i sincerely hope it will be a BIG success
(doubt it, though)
so that the next model or the one after that has a keyboard again

lots of ifs there - I will believe it when I see it - the community developer/software company uptake is the most important. Quite a few Maemo era devs were burned by Nokia pre and during the Elop annoucement and I want to see if there still exists a decent mass of devs who want to commit to a deadend phone. If not then I wont buy simple as that.

Plus - its not the existing Maemo apps I care about - its support by companies (especially streaming, games, media etc).

at worst (if the CPU isn't a Moorestown) it'll be the same old game of having to select between different architectures when downloading stuff
possibly having to compile it if Intel decides that they won't support ARM any more.
then again, MeeGo is open source, so if the kernel and compiler and libraries are available, that could be managed.

not really, only the 1st IF is crucial (binary compatibility)
if that is given, the rest is no problem, really
flash and java support are provided by OSS on the general Linux / GNU platform, thus w/ binary compatibility it can be ported even to a different processor architecture
(see the Debian "emulation" on the N900)

but the success of the device to make it attractive for ppl to remain developing is not to be underestimated, indeed.
otherwise it'll be NITDroid all over

.
two things...
the developer who has a killer app idea will develop, somehow.
it's usually not the ppl working from 9 to 5 who do those kinds of apps, but ppl who know who to cross compile, use an emulator or a compatible device...
"Talent hits the target nobody can hit, and a Genius hits the target nobody can see"

but i don't think that a killer app will create a market for a device.
no matter how good an app, if ppl don't want to buy the device, the app won't make them.

Have to agree here; however the lack of good, polished apps is also not going to help matters either.

The more apps that folks have access to that they start to somehow believe "they cannot live without" helps out the consumer. The developer type will either script it, make it happen or work with others that can make their need happen in app form - think fMMS or The One Ring.

As it stands, Nokia should know by now they need vendor support, that will bring in the consumers. And they need to be clear about the development and app store - that will keep the developers. I just doubt they will do so for the Harmattan device. It's up to the community and some developer to create an app that will draw others to it.

That's my take.

That wasn't said. They just said to me, that there are not enough devices and therefore they will not distribute devices. I don't know if this is true of course.

the number of attendees is probably a bogus excuse, indeed.
a number which may have played a much bigger role is... one
one NOKIA MeeGo device in 2011.
and the fact that Intel ruled there would be no product announcements.
thus even if NOKIA was to announce a consumer MeeGo device at the very same time the developer device is distributed @ MeeGo 2011, that could still be interpreted as TWO devices.
that would make Elop & Rich Green look like clowns.
when / where is the next MeeGo event where developers are likely to attend?

could be, could be...
(i'm screwing w/ the NDA.ers minds here >;-)
could be the developer device that was stockpiled last year was without keyboard (like the N8?) and the consumer device will have a keyboard (like the E7?) and turn out to be the RM-680 after all

I've never understood how this forum attracts worst kind of trolls. People like misterc (who probably has been here under many user names) just enjoy trying to destroy the forum's feelgood feeling with their hate and nonsense. The sudden tone changes between their posts possibly tell the medication doses in their brains keep changing. From hate to friendship, from troll to buddy. But still as crazy as ever.
