Hmm, for many purposes stated here a tool like netcat would suffice.

very true...but I guess old habits are difficult to get rid of...and you are sure that you will get a telnet client on pretty any OS by default, which is not the case of netcat (AIX and Solaris base installs lack netcat, but telnet is present).

Aah, the long forgotten protocols! The average user now has no idea what the http:// prefix is all about!

Like others, I only really use telnet to diagnose service availability, small talk to SMTP servers etc.

BBSes were cool, crazy ANSI welcome screens, file transfer protocols like Zmodem, Kermit?! I never ran one, just a mere co-sysop for a while and a Fidonet node, (.1 or something?) from an uplink BBS - can't remember why now.

telnet nethack.alt.org

no better game in the world

And I admin a lot of systems either through telnet or preferably ssh. Not to mention my mail client(re-alpine) and irc client(irssi) are both terminal based so I use that extensively through dtach and ssh

May the terminal live long and prosper

P.S.: at one time I even used telnet to access the internet. We have a special ISP for students and they limited the use of the account to 10h/week. Of course I quickly went over that so had to dial into their system and telnet to some shell acount then used zmodem and stuff to transfer stuff

bluetooth serial adapter would probably be the easiest.

Hey ruskie.

Do you use your tablet to get on Nethack or just a PC?

Here are two pictures of how I've played online awhile ago.

I've basically moved on to ADOM after finding a server for it in Germany.

Anyway, I thought you might like to see them. The first one is a perfect 80x24 display.

Cheers.

I don't yet own a tablet If the n900 wasn't coming out I would have gotten a n810 a month or so ago.

But I prefer nethack or something even less hack'n'slash and more of a think'n'avoid so adom certainly isn't for me

But yeah I'll certainly play it... maybe even get another win(I only have one so far )

I use telnet, not as a log-in tool, but as a generic pure TCP/IP test client. You can for example telnet to an ssh port to verify that it is alive, and see the ssh daemon version. And you can verify that an http server is working, for example. You can feed it direct commands without needing any special tool. You can basically use telnet to talk to any tcp/ip-based server when you're doing testing.
>telnet localhost 22
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
SSH-1.99-OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-7
