Yes. I signed up at a local retailer (Radio Shack) and got the Even More Plus plan with a dumb phone. (The only way I could get it). I Could call out and in on N900 but no data connection. I called their support line, I was warned it would take a few hours to a couple of days, but the rep through she knew what was wrong. She asked for the IMEI number of my phone, had me take shutdown and restart the phone (and yank out the battery. She said it help speed up the process). I went to connections and selected T-Mobile and called up Slashdot on the Web app. She had fixed it while I was on the phone. That was the best level 1 support called I've ever had. And I used to work in the industry so I know the horrors of tech support that can exists with carriers.

They probably need your N900 IMEI number to associated it with your account. Should be able to fixed it while you are on the phone. With then. Best to call them on an another line.

FWIW I got a even more plus sim-only plan 30 minutes from a tmobile store before I got the N900 from the nokia store. They desired a imea but were able to proceed without it.

So can the $10 unlimited plan be added to the N900 easily, settings-wise? If I call them and need to give them my IMEI, won't they force me to get on their smartphone plan?

You can always login to your tmobile account, and just switch the phone on there and then call them. Pick the shadow, or a 'dumb phone'

Yeah, go ahead and call them up. They'll tell you it takes 2 to 72 hours for it get connected. That's a complete bull.

The results should be the same. Although for safety's sake, I called T-Mobile and had them send me the internet settings config file to my phone. This setup uses epc.tmobile.com and thats what i have been using. the 3G areas work well with a solid connection and high transfer rate.

See its this kind of support from Tmobile that makes me stick with them. They ALWAYS try to help - sometimes they cant but they ALWAYS try. No just trying to get you off the phone and onto the next call.

Have seen several people now discussing giving TMobile the IMEI of their n900. Since when has that ever been necessary? Doesn't that defeat one of the advantages of SIM cards, i.e. portability between multiple phones, etc.?

Carriers have always been able to find out the IMEI, and some will make service changes if, for example, they see the encoded model number matches one of their offered smart phones.

I've changed phones numerous times and have never been asked to provide this before.
