I am on the wrong pc for the schematics of the n900 but my guess is it is indeed a software problem IF he has got audio coming from both sides.

you just need two headphones and two devices to test this
plug each headphone into each device, verify you get stereo on the non-n900 and non-stereo on the n900
Verify you get sound from left and right speaker (not headphone) on the n900 with no headphone inserted.
Yes? Return unit for repair.

You could try "alsamixer -c 0" in the terminal and try different settings.
