symbian will long continue but mostly in the mid-priced range whereas Meego will be for high end devices....well that's the jist from what i have read about nokia's future strategy!
am not knocking symbian but maemo kicks it's but and nokia are moving into a position to try and take back the smartphone sales against some big opposition and they appear to be heavily siding with meego as the future!.

I'm of course also looking forward to MeeGo and have used Maemo devices for years but Symbian is still a better phone OS. Maemo has amazing computing abilities but Symbian is still very powerful. Symbian was let down by a crap amount of ram in the N97 which was their last flagship but later firmware updates have improved it a lot. I speak from experience, my wife has one.

The Symbian^3 devices will also be getting a new QtWebkit browser which should put it on par with the best browsers on other devices.

If Vanjoki says S^4 is a strong possibility in the N Series going forward, that trumps anythig a random spokesperson said. Period.

Will it happen? Who knows. Is it a possibiltiy? Damn sure it is.

I think the differences between Symbian and MeeGo will become less relevant in future due to Qt. Just looking at Nokia's track record, a top end Symbian^4 and MeeGo 2.0 device will probably come out again at the end of next year and a mid-range MeeGo 1.0 device should also pop up in Q3 2011.

No scp, ssh, or vi, no interest.

Yes, this very important is often overlooked. As time goes by a common app-pool will form and Qt itself becomes the platform. People don't quite get how an OS is not a defining aspect of the platform, but hey... Maybe people will (wrongly) call Qt an OS after a while, just like they Bada an OS (which it also isn't).

That doesn't mean that Symbian^4 is not forthcoming. They're already showing beta screenshots of it.

What they will ship and what they have shipped are two different things. Symbian^3 is on the way out sooner than later.

That doesn't mean that this is not still a feature-laden phone that will have some nice audio and video capabilities. I personally just don't like being shoved into deadend OS paths and zero upgrade ability.

That shouldn't be too hard to understand - I like open ended options, not deadends.

Then get an iPhone if you want those kinds of force-fed updates. There is no guarantee that a newer OS version will work with an older device.

My iPhone 3G is slow as hell after the iOS update and I would have much rather preferred a firmware update for the previous OS that supports my phone's hardware. There would be more of an outcry if an automatic update to Symbian^4 makes people's phones run slower. Symbian^3 will be around for a long time just like S60 v5 now renamed Symbian^1 has moved to the mid to lower end.

Yes, but with that price??? I rather wait until it comes down first.
