I have the same question (related to the following bug report:
http://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5833).
Are you simply using the package meta information [1] or something more sophisticated?

I can confirm that "Fureteur" is not very used in French.
We prefer the term "navigateur".
If I look at the fureteur definition at the cnrtl : "(Celui, celle) qui s'introduit quelque part et qui fouille partout, dans l'espoir de découvrir ou de s'approprier quelque chose."
I don't know if this could really apply to a web browser.
Is "Fureteur" used in your fr-Variant ?
