@OP
There are some features the N900 no longer/can't operate, if you need these go for the N9. If you need the full linux and hardware of its predecessor, don't think you'll find any improvement.

The only reason I'd upgrade to N9 would be support for AT&T 3G in the US. GPRS doesn't really let me use all N900 potential and switching to T-Mobile is not a viable option in my case. I'm not after the looks, but I have to admit N9 is a beautiful piece of hardware.

Time to buy an N900 again. I think the N9 and N900 will get on well together. Tether with the N9 and I can use the N900 without a second SIM.

Especially with the font update on the way...
There's def. more commercial apps coming out than there was for N900 at this stage of it's life-cycle.
And community apps/ports are slowly but surely gaining momentum:
