I use an N97 for more than what some power users will use theri N900 for. Its by no means a slouch - hence why its the flagship device for Nokia at this time.

If you expected a new iPhone, the N900 was probably a bad purchase...

I also moved to N900 from N97. The N900 is way more powerful, much better screen and speed, but it is a mobile computer (with a phone) and does not have all "smartphone" features. But it does make up for it in computing features for me... The N900 is so cool, and future potential exciting!

Everyone has to decide for themselves. The N900 is a not consumer-level smartphone. It is a mobile computer with phone features, because Maemo is not yet ready to be a smartphone.

See Nokia's specs:

They hardly mention the phone part...

Having read many posts and threads it seems that currently, using a stylus is absolutely essential.

Please confirm whether I'm correct in my assumption?

Thanks

Depends on the application though most developers are good about following the finger friendly usability standard. Straight Linux ports won't though.

When I read this thread it implies one has no option but to use a stylus:

That thread is from last year, and it's about the old devices (OS2008/Maemo 4), not the N900 and Maemo 5. None of the built-in apps on the N900 require a stylus, but a few third-party apps are somewhat less than finger friendly.

Personally, while I'm glad it's not needed for most things, I really like having a stylus. It's nice to be able to actually draw instead of just finger-paint, and use apps with tons of buttons (e.g. graphing calculator emulators, desktop Linux apps, etc.)

Not to mention the stylus is really useful when browsing websites with small links, without having to zoom in every time. Just point with the stylus that is precise and doesn't block your view.

But perfectly usable with finger too, I personally use it a lot with the stylus because of the way it won't block the screen when using it. A pointy, slim stylus really offers some great usability.

But fingers work well too, and better than on the N97.

Thanks very much for the information.

I was in a real panic as I'm too old (66 in ten days time) to have to use a stylus regularly.

Can't confirm I never use the stylus.
(well, VERY rarely I do, but mostly because of "bad habits" from N800 and N810 days )
