I find my n900 very useful and there isn't much I can't do with it if I put in the effort. Often there are missing features where I would have to seek a workaround but I think that is true of any phone. I think the drawback is that there is very little support outside of this community so you kind of get use to feeling left out reading about releases for iOS and Android only. Being a long time Linux user I've sort of got use to that from the PC market anyway, there are always alternatives that I have to seek out and the same is true for maemo.
Now the device itself I think is great but as you already know support isn't great even from Nokia themselves you will feel like a second rate citizen but that's never stopped me with Linux and I get by just fine.
Another great reply (my personal opinion)
I am not asking for any alternatives since there aren't any with resistive screen and keyboard. I do however appreciate getting your user experience of both the phone and Nokia as a company.

IIRC, before Iphone started giving updates to their old models nobody expected any OS updates at all for their phones. Just bugfixes. So I don't get to depressed about not getting further development, as long as there will be another update to fix some bugs. (Which may not happen of course). And if not then maybe they're bugs I can live with.

A year later I'll just update myself by buying another phone. Just like I have done every year the last decade or so.

So, can I run Garnet VM on a device other than the N900? Can that same device run OpenOffice.org and the Gimp? Does that device have an FM transmitter? Can I run programs coded with the same toolkits I am already familiar with from years of using and coding in Linux (Qt and GTK)? Does that same device allow me to multitask as smoothly as the N900? I'll stop there to make it fair. If such a device exist I will be interested.
Lets take the Touch Pro 2 as an example:

Umm, yes:http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=53436

Does that device have an FM transmitter?
It has a built in FM radio receiver.

Yes, according to my friend google:

Do I win a prize?

FM receiver is not quite the same as a transmitter is it? But, kudos for getting technically close. OK, I'll consider it. Lets see. Hmm, Windows mobile. Ha ha ha. That was funny. Thanks for playing but no thanks.

*sigh*

My phone is better than yours!

No You!

No You!

...

Yay... I just regressed back to grade school.

I was going to attempt to correct some of danramos' exaggerations (ironically: The exact same kind of Fanboism he attacks from Fanbois here) - then I realized... what's the point?

This topic is sooo old by now guys. The information is already out there for anyone willing to search.

You like Android? Great.. get Android. You like an iPhone? Wonderful. You like your N900? Fantastic......

Oh yeah.... Who gives a ****?

Seriously... it's a god damned phone people.

The problem with with what you just wrote is that you did, in fact, try to unhitch the N900 from Nokia as an important detail. They are the manufacturer, support and system update provider you must deal with after owning one, despite his outstanding grammar, impressive literary form and magnificent outline structure. I disagree with that whole premise (not the literary one) and I made that disagreement known. Clearly you don't agree. Now we know where we both stand with regard to how important the brand name is or isn't to either of us, negative or positive either way.

Yes, sir! Right away! Try this, for a change!
Here's some examples I found from there:
http://gadgetophilia.com/top-5-android-phones/ (Look at the LG GW620)
http://blog.laptopmag.com/dr-eye-mid...-facing-camera
etc...etc..

There's a few more out there too. All sorts of variations (keyboard with resistive touchscreen, no keyboard with resistive touchscreen, keyboard with capacitive touchscreen, etc.) if you just search for them. (i.e. http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/...ndroid-phones/) Their snarky "unlike all other" anti-resistive touchscreen remark, it seems like a nice unit.

Hope that helped a bit.

I feel very similar to OP. I will say something else though.

If all you wanna do is come here every day to troll, whine, nag and complain, maybe it's time for you to go somewhere else. I don't want to hear you recommending iPhones and Android phones to every second person. I'm not interested. There are several sites I can go to if I wanted that info. If you have reached the point where you hate Nokia so much that you want to destroy them then don't come here. I don't want your energy here. Go to Nokia forums or Gizmodo or Engadget or Nokia conversations and let them know there because I don't give a Fu k.

I'm one of those guys who used to come here years ago right before buying my N800 and I loved it. It was fun coming here. I own an iPhone, a few Symbian phones and an N900. When I bought my N800 I still used a Treo 650 because I loved it. I didn't go around trolling Palm forums dissing people and complaining because the device wasn't right for me anymore. I left quietly. Please do the same if this applies to you.

Maybe it's time for you to stop participating in threads where you are tired of reading complaints? Communication, either way, is the whole point of these forums. So long as they're civil, they're still necessary to know the who, what, why, where and when's of everything Maemo (and MeeGo, soon).

I feel sorry for you, that you feel the need to troll, whine, nag and complain about how other people are participating in discussions that you don't like.

maluka, you hit the nail on the head.

I posted on this thread late last night lamenting the negativity pervasive on TMO. This morning I find the thread FULL of bile and vitreol and having degenerated into the usual chest-beating, urinating-up-the-wall contest.

Perhaps we get more of this here is because N900 has such potential and attracts a wide range of owners.

Whatever the reason, some of come here looking for better ways to use and adapt our EXISTING devices.

Sure, when I'm next in the market for a new device I'll look around at ALL the options. Until then, whilst it's good to learn the potential of other devices, I do not want to have to pick my way through other people's excreta to find the nuggets of info to help me enjoy my CURRENT device.

danramos

you would be entirely correct were it not for the fact that the vast majority of threads degenerate like this.

We all have the right to participate within forum rules but I was under the impression this site was for those interested in improving the N900 & other NIT's either collectively or individually rather provide the battleground for schoolyard bickering & point-making.

No device is forever; N900 is not without its faults and Nokia may well be the Axis of Evil, I just want to enjoy my device
