Yep,

Even basic .wav files canīt be played on mine and all ads specify that format as well. Pretty unhandy as I get voicemails emailed to me as .wav from work and hence canīt listen to them on my phone, but have to upload them to my laptop first, arghhhh.

I wonder when codec support for wav and wmv, which according the Nokia-alternate-reality, is already on my device, is coming to the actual reality most of us other folks live in.

Explain, in your own words, what "basic .wav" means to you.

Also, as for WMV. It plays non-drm-ed WMV9 files with hardware acceleration. Mplayer is able to play the ancient WMV1,2,8 variants but without HW accel. Drm is a no-go in any form or shape. No idea how this fits somebody's alternate reality or philosophical stance on whether this means WMV support or not.

.wav is a pretty basic format for any player to play. It is probably the most generic format used.

I donīt remember many players Iīve had, $5 in value and above that couldnīt play the format.

Eh, it won't matter...isn't VLC being worked on for the N900? That should pick up any slack.

Well this is a bummer, I just encoded a title from a DVD (using Handbrake):

MP4 file container, H.264 (x264) Video, AAC (faac) Audio, Chapter Markers
source: 720x576 output: 704x400
Video: Encoder H.264(x264) Target size: 700(MB)(3960(kbps) abr)
Audio Track 1: English(AC3)(2.0 ch) Encoder: AAC (faac) Mixdown: Stereo SampleRate: Auto(khz) Bitrate: 128(kbps), DRC: Off

Saves to .m4v but WON'T play on device.

Any ideas on why it won't play?

EDIT: I installed the codec pack from here: http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=397776&postcount=1 but still no dice

Use h264 baseline profile. main profile wont work.

Anyone tried whether gmc and qpel work with mpeg4 asp/xvid/divx?

I have been dabbling around with video encoding, and if I'll receive my N900 today, I'll be sure to test what exact limitations there are in the internal (h264 / mpeg4) dsp decoder.

I'd Imagine that you can play almost anything with mplayer, but that is going to do the decoding using the cpu and probably uses up the battery faster.

On the N8x0, the DSP is extremely picky about dimensions; everything had to be, IIRC, multiples of 16. I haven't tested this on the N900 yet.

well. guess i cheated by installing codec support from the other repos. jsut went through my 2tb network share and played 5 random avi files. all of them played. i know im not within the out of boc scenario, but you can greatly expand the devices media capabilities in a few simple steps.

just throwing it out there.
