Also, most people use mp3 or some other highly compressed format these days so I'm not sure why we would want to go to the trouble of supporting it. It's not really a modern file format for music anymore.
I figured that may had been the reason for that, I just wanted to post all the info from my quick test. Thanks for the response.

Thanks for the advice. I downloaded this application, and even though I believed my previously much-edited tags were all right as they were, I re-did them with this software. Interesting experience, but ultimately without any different results. My songs are still not displayed in Kagu in accordance with their tags (to the extent I understand the matter, which may not be all that great). Thanks again.

There must be something we're not seeing/understanding here. I edit MP3 files all the time using tag editors. It's pretty simple. Set the Author, Album, and Title. Also set the Track if it matters. Then you upload it to the n800 and run kagu-scanner. I do it all the time with audio books. It just works.

Do you have a tag editor that displays the id3v1 *and* id3v2 tags so you can compare them? I've used EyeD3 for this before to debug a Canola tag issue I was having. Maybe if you can show us the output of eyed3 for one song then we can figure out what's up.

If one happened to have both a "cover.jpg" and a "folder.jpg" which would take precedence in Kagu?

Trevarthan: I'm afraid that utilizing EyeD3 is beyond my level of expertise. I'm making too much of this, though -- and wasting too much of your (and my) time. My dilemma is that my song titles, as apparently contained in Kagu, have the artist's name coming first, then the album name, then lastly the title of the song. Obviously the display area is too limited to reveal more then the artist's name and only part of the album title. The song title doesn't get a chance to appear. I edited the tags to eliminate the album title with the intent that only the artist and song title would then appear. My N800 file manager listing follows this format perfectly, but Kagu keeps picking up the artist and album title first. Consequently, in my listing of song titles, I only get the artists with numerous listings of the same album. No song titles are displayed to help me choose which song to put in the playlist. In the future, I will only rip entire albums. Again, many, many thanks. I'm prepared to drop the matter, if you are!

So, you're putting all of your songs in one dir? That might have something to do with it. We use the dirs to help us identify albums with multiple artists that should be classified as "Various Artists". Kagu sort of expects an /media/mmc2/album_name/song_name.mp3 format. We've tested having various artists within the same dir, but I'm not sure what happens if you've got various albums in the same dir.

We've changed the scanner code a good bit 1.0.8. You can always try that and see if it helps. I'll try to test about lumping a bunch of songs into one dir later tonight.

Trevarthan: Last night, in yet another (desperate?) attempt, I deleted my FAVORITE SONGS directory and reloaded all the songs individually onto the mmc. They are now in their initial artist_name/album_name/song_name.mp3 format. This has not resulted in any change in their appearance in Kagu from what I described previously. I don't want to re-edit the tags to remove the artist_name in first position, as for me that's of key importance in identifying the songs to be played (as some of the song titles are sung by different artists).

What do you mean, "in first position?" You putting the artist name before the song title in the ID3 tags? Like, "artist - title" for the Title tag?

I just don't understand why you're having trouble with this. I'd have to see an example of your ID3 tags I think to figure it out.

Trevarthan: Exactly! I'm "putting the artist name before the song title in the ID3 tags? Like, "artist - title" for the Title tag." Is this possibly the cause of my problem? Is there a better way to achieve what I want? Tonight I think I'll have another go with mp3tag and change around the string orders. Again, many thanks.
