First of all everyone knows the N900's current firmware's front camera is poor at best.

The mirror application is poor on resources.

Here is an alternative.

Install mplayer form one of the repositories. I do not think it is officially supported, so WARNING and know what your doing, blah blah blah disclaimer.

After mplayer is installed, open up x terminal

For the front camera use the command
Code:
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1 -vf mirror
For the rear camera use the command
Code:
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video0
There is no need to mirror the rear camera.

You should be able to use mencoder to record without the amber led once it shows up in your repos.

Have you read the post and installed mplayer from the repository first? If not then that would explain it

"No such driver: v412"

It is an L not a one.

braincreation: Thanks for the mplayer command lines, but:

What does that mean? The mirror app uses the built-in gstreamer framework, how is it "poor on resources"?

mencoder comes with mplayer, at least it did with mine.

Ah, silly me. Filthy stinking success after I put the L in there. Though.. the image quality is just as bad as the mirror application (and this time its stretched).

Can't the in-built GStreamer do all this without the need for another 20 MB install?
