Hi,

Everynow and then my desktop freezes and I cannot use the widgets or shortcuts. I can still use the task switcher in the top left to get to an application and I can still get the menu with options for going online/offline, switching 2g/3g/dual etc. so it's just the desktop...

I am linux-friendly (although not an expert), my fedora based memories tell me that I might need to restart X ?

Thanks,

Ben

Sorry for this obvious answer but my basic instinct tells me to restart the device ? can try by taking off battery and sim.

Yes, restarting the device works of course (that's what I do at the moment). I don't need to take out the battery as I can still use the device, it's just the shortcuts/widgets that are no longer responding, however I really don't want to have to restart the device to fix this if I can just restart one component via xterm - I just need to work out what needs to be restarted!

Just wanted to throw in, that to me it seems, as if the freeze of the desktop, seems to be related to the auto-rotation of the browser. I.e. if I don't use the browser in vertical mode, I never get a freeze.

Can anyone confirm this ?

Rebooting certainly "solves" many things, and is sometimes the simple solution. However, many geeks - Linux users in particular - prefer to find out what's wrong, and how to fix it, seeing rebooting as "taking the easy way out". That is, it works, but you don't know why it works, and if it ever comes to a situation in which rebooting isn't a viable option, then you're stuck. For some, it's also a matter of /wanting/ to understand.
Also, for that matter, rebooting the phone while on the go is hard on the battery, and thus restarting only X would be preferable.

I never use browser in vertical mode, but I have (since 1.1.1, with a few new -devel installs) started getting temporary desktop lockups very similar to those described by the OP. In my case, I can still move between my 4 desktops & I can still use contact shortcuts, but shortcuts to web pages and app's stop responding - however, if I don't manually redstart hildon-desktop, this tends to resolve itself within a few minutes. Also, a fix can often be "triggered" just by running the web app directly. After that, the various app/web shortcuts that I'd selected while the phone was "blocked" all launch in quick succession.

On occasion all desktop contact icons vanish, but the rest of the system seems to be unaffected.
I get them back on a restart, but is there a terminal based way to make them show?

There are three programs, each with its own quirky behaviour. Try any combination of the three commands until you see what works for you:
Code:
killall hildon-desktop
killall hildon-home
killall hildon-status-menu

i have made an app for my own device with a desktop shortcut. this app does all the above commands. restarting your device doesn't really help

ill upload it soon as a temp solution. this has been answered many many time's and will be fixed in 1.2.

the actual command by the way is

sudo gainroot
killall hildon-desktop
killall hildon-home
killall hildon-status-menu

you may loose your widgets but all you get to do is re-apply them
