Deleting the .ds_store file will do no harm. This is only used by Finder and Spotlight to store meta data. If it does not exist in a folder then it will turn up sooner than later.

Filename completion:
In the terminal window (Ctrl - Shift - x), rather than type in a very long file name (or full path name to a file), you can get the shell (the '$') to complete the filename...
