I think we're supposed to be able to switch between engines? maybe in the future we can switch from microB, to WebKit, Opera, or whatever.

Hopefully, I like choices

I don't know if this is relevant, but I've been using both Opera and Mozilla-based browsers since their early beta stages. Opera has always been lighter on memory use and more responsive in general.

Maybe browser can protect itself better from bad Flash applets? Maybe Flash plugin needs even more work (good progress has been made so far)? Whatever the right solution, without it internet browsing - what tablets are supposed to be doing best - can't be considered first class.

Frankly - yes, my recent, purely subjective impression is that it is better in Opera. Yes, it's not really fair to blame the browser for Flash problems, but Flash is mostly consumed via browser, so they are kinda married and given better perceived performance in Opera one can't help thinking that maybe MicroB can do better than it does now.

Expectations are high, but not unreasonable. I think they are mostly driven by Nokia's marketing and hardware specs. I think most users would agree that N8x0 tablets as amazing as they are still do not realize their full potential. Flash is not the only weak area.

We all hope.

Me too.. But as far as I've understood Opera is phased out in OS2008, so it'll be limited to MicroB (and later, I think) WebKit + whatever.

Even though I may be sticking to OS2007 longer than I thought I don't think it'll be forever..

It's tough to figure out the best solution. I'm really not sure how the browser could protect itself, aside from killing applets that consume too much memory or CPU, but I'd be willing to bet most applets are going to require more CPU than the tablet can provide.

Does Nokia have access to the Flash plugin source, or is it all on Adobe to optimize?

If you have suggestions on how the browser could better protect itself, without disabling applets, you should post them on bugs.maemo.org.

I wonder what's keeping the old Opera from running in OS2008?
If no official support comes, maybe we'll see a hack.

Licensing. It costs money.

It's already running in OS2007 on the N800, I don't see how upgrading some other software would have anything to do with their license?

If Nokia has a license, I'd imagine it's per hardware, not software.

I don't get it

Hasn't the hardware changed? It think it has. Which I would think supercedes the software, running on an N800 or not. The software was designed for the N810 first, the N800 second.

I'd love to download try and use the new operating system. But the more I read of these posts here and elsewhere on this site the more reluctant I become to switch over. I would much rather have the use of Skype than a better Youtube experience. With the 07 OS version I do have good Skype quality. From the posts here I understand Skype doesn't work with 08. I doubt that this is because of Nokia. Skype seems very slow to make adjustments. Other than that, Opera works fine for me. My N800 hardly ever crashes. I just think the N800 is like a Sports car. When I need a heavy hauler I just move up to the laptop. Anyway, no plans to switch over. I don't have time for the hassles involved in getting it to work after the switch.
