On the J1962, certain pins are reserved (it is an SAE spec and I think you can find it online). Pins 4 and 5 are ground (chassis and signal, but are usually common). Pin 16 goes to the battery.

On the AirCable units I use, you can set the password to anything, however I have removed RS232 TX pin 3 from the connection so it is one-way only (and why the OBD unit has to start sending data from power-up).

Bluetooth itself has security problems, but even OBD-II can't do much other than to clear fault codes.

I also have a WiFi to serial port (from connectone.com via mouser electronics) which can be made as secure as WiFi.

And if I was worried, I could always use USB host mode and hardwire it - In another thread somewhere someone else needed to do /dev/ttyUSB0 for his non-Bluetooth GPS. You can specify a device instead of the bluetooth string in minigpsd.

I think you can get this from any mobile supporting the AT command set...
Code:
[1|user@Nokia-N800-23-14|~]gnokii --getnetworkinfo
GNOKII Version 0.6.27cvs
Network : T-Mobile / Western Wireless / Voicestream (United States of America)
Network code : 310 26
LAC : a5a1 (42401)
Cell id : 00004fbc (20412)

BitPim? Eww. It's all about GSM,UMTS etc, not CDMA! :P

Here's Sony Ericsson at command set:

Used by BT Info: http://java.xor.sk/?x=ftp_bt&en=1 and MyPhoneExplorer : www.fjsoft.at

I've discovered that my wifi doesn't work very well on my N810 when I've left minigpsd running. What I mean is that while I am assigned an IP, I seem to have problems accessing most sites & services (site time outs). To fix I have to shut minigpsd down then disconnect (or disconnect & shut minigpsd off, either way) & then reconnect to the wifi AP. Then all's well.

I've tested this out with several difference AP's at several different locations, so as far as I can tell it's not something to do with a particular one.

Anyone else having any similar issues? TX

Carman only supports (specific) OBD-II BlueTooth interfaces; no USB; no /dev/ttyUSB0. The cheaper ones are BlueTooth 1.2; the more expensive ones BlueTooth 2.0. BlueTooth 1.2 is easily crackable, provides only 10 metres. BlueTooth 2.0 has known, theoretical vulnerabilities not commonly exploited yet; but provides 100 metres. I have no idea how or whether it is possible to change the authentication code. I'd like to do this on my BlueTooth GPS, but I don't know how.

After initial reviews I'll most likely opt for BlueTooth 1.2 because of its shorter range and make a half Faraday cage around it. It isn't bank account data, but its still nobody's business.

Oh, and I'll be combining it with Minigpsd and Wayfinder/Navicore.

Put off BlueTooth and see if the problem is solved. The BlueTooth MAC address is hardcoded in the scripts; you must edit it manually.

It seems to work fine if I blank out both BT address settings in the conf menu, but as you said that doesn't 'stick' past reboot. But I can't for the life of me find where those values are saved? Throw me a lifeline? TX

It will survive a reboot (if you clicked save and don't reinstall from the original deb). I'm working on a new UI and conf system that will turn these off by default, and be better about finding the devices when turned on.

Sorry but I'm not sure what you mean by 'clicked save'? I don't see a save settings selection in the applet drop-down menu. I'm running 0.30-pre4. Is that the latest version? TX
