No.

"Closing down the repos" is a bit negative way say what we want. We all want that packages are found from Extras.

I don't know what your particular issues are, but this is linux. You have just about full control of your linking and/or the environment you're program runs in. Sure, we don't want to thrash on memory by everyone linking or pointing to their own version of a common library, but that and drive space should be your only constraints for having a successful install. Your program running smoothly is a different matter...

Ukki's issue is ruby. There is ruby for maemo, but develeper has never released any sources afaik.

As said above, we are talking about MIGRATION, not EXTERMINATION of stuff in repositories.

I did some quick googling, and I think I understand the problem (no source for a Maemo 3 binary that's incompatible with Maemo 4?). Am I close? Regardless, would someone mind giving me the synopsis in more detail.

Developer restarts the project every year, then loses interest and refuses to finish the job and release sources. So we are left with new binary packages each year. I really couldn't care less anymore, but I'd still like to maintain the app.

I know you've been burned, but let's be fair. It's not an "interest" issue, or a "refusal" issue but one of available time. alterego has simply had other (vastly more important) priorities to focus on than the Ruby packaging.

But, really, this just goes to illustrate exactly why having things in Extras is so important. When you have source packages available you're not beholden to a single maintainer to continue maintaining things. If they get hit by a bus, somebody else can step up in their place and everyone depending on them isn't left SOL.

I'm going to be evil and quote & reply to myself here because I forgot to include the link to the blog post initially (stupid finger keyboard + work combo ), and I believe everybody should read it to get some background on the situation.

If you have a problem packaging Ruby then please ask some help from the maemo.org debmaster. This is why we are funding him as a full time job.

If this was the case, he could have just released the source and let someone else do it. And this was done twice with almost identical pattern. But I doubt it would do any good anymore, there aren't many apps written with it.

@qgil, I know about the debmaster, but he really can't turn the binary packages into source.
