I agree with your final equation, but, apart from the N900 being also a phone, why do you think it has so much more mass appeal? (Don't tell me it's the specs -- they aren't any more ahead of the competition now than were the earlier NITs in their respective time frames.)

"So why do so many criticize the iPhone, if it's so great? I think it's because they make the classic marketing mistake of thinking "It's all about ME."

"So why do so many criticize the iPhone, if it's so great? I think it's because they make the classic marketing mistake of thinking "It's all about ME." It isn't. The iPhone haters see the limitations (hard keys, cut/paste, tethering...) of the phone, and they focus on how the phone doesn't have any tech breakthrough or meet THEIR specific needs. But the mass market is what really matters in business."

PS: To humor you, I will tell you why I do not own an iPhone. It is because I do not want to commit to a 2-year contract with the cellular provider. It is because I have no intention to buy content from the "largest online content store". It is because I would like to be able to place my existing content onto the device, as files, rather than use cumbersome proprietary iTunes application. It is because I have no interest in having to jailbreak my own device every time a new firmware update comes out. And guess what? I am not even one of those "open source advocates"! I just do not want Apple or Microsoft, or Google, or some other corporate entity to become a permanent part of my life. At least Nokia still has enough reason left to stay out.
