It's really as simple as: more users equals more applications.
I agree with your final equation, but, apart from the N900 being also a phone, why do you think it has so much more mass appeal? (Don't tell me it's the specs -- they aren't any more ahead of the competition now than were the earlier NITs in their respective time frames.)

I didn't see a car mount in the box. Would it be sold separately? N810 did include one.

It has hardware acceleration = pretty graphics. Simple as that. For example, the Windows Mobile OS has horrible graphics (non-skinned). I'd rather use Palm OS4 just because it looks better.

I think that maybe the specs are not that groundbreaking, but they shine on their own. Not any single aspect is underspecced or lagging, IMO..

It is a long time since a Nokia device last went to market with current or next gen hardware. They have been catching up in this department since N95 (to my taste).

So It is a well specced device having a great OS under the hood, and there SEEMS to be what has been lacking in the past to make Maemo a viable alternative for mass market..: Nokia SEEMS to be supporting it big time.

Now It is only a question of thinking about "consumers" instead of "geeks", as G.A. said, bigger, wider market..

"So why do so many criticize the iPhone, if it's so great? I think it's because they make the classic marketing mistake of thinking "It's all about ME." It isn't. The iPhone haters see the limitations (hard keys, cut/paste, tethering...) of the phone, and they focus on how the phone doesn't have any tech breakthrough or meet THEIR specific needs. But the mass market is what really matters in business."

So, why are you referring to another iPhone article in an RX-51 thread?

PS: To humor you, I will tell you why I do not own an iPhone. It is because I do not want to commit to a 2-year contract with the cellular provider. It is because I have no intention to buy content from the "largest online content store". It is because I would like to be able to place my existing content onto the device, as files, rather than use cumbersome proprietary iTunes application. It is because I have no interest in having to jailbreak my own device every time a new firmware update comes out. And guess what? I am not even one of those "open source advocates"! I just do not want Apple or Microsoft, or Google, or some other corporate entity to become a permanent part of my life. At least Nokia still has enough reason left to stay out.

I know a lot of "mass marketers" who still prefer a stick shift -- it's faster off the line and all.

The critiques have nothing to do with technology or needs as the author purports. There are FAR more mass market things our there in the smartphone arena, all with their respective limitations. The iPhone (and many other Apple products) are on the other hand very dichotomic in that on one side they are marketed (and sometimes contain) super high tech and design, but at the other hand fail at basic things/use-cases that were taken by granted by that same 'mass market' - and that's why it's so sweet for many to bash.

Bravo! Well said!
