No, it doesn't. Youtube uses H.264 as HTML5 encoder while the Mozilla engine decodes Ogg/Theora.

EDIT: Or, well, it does support HTML5 but not Youtube's implementation of it.
EDIT#2: And MicroB, the built-in browser, uses the Mozilla engine.

Given the platform's aims, it will be interesting to see how Mozilla & Maemo move with HTML5 (licensing, engineering, and politics play equal parts here). This should be pretty interesting.

Timeless is... passionate about things he does, so much so, that feelings of other people tend to be secondary on his list of priorities I've had a long talk with timeless in Prague during MozCamp Europe, he's OK.

Software engineers aren't paid to be marketing people, that's for sure. Timeless means well with what he says. He's not purposely attempting to be rude or anything like that. He's good people.

There is no such thing as "supports HTML5". No browser support the complete spec. In fact no browser is even near complete HTML5 support.

Some browsers implement parts of the HTML5 spec. Opera has the lead in some areas, Gecko (Firefox) in other areas and Webkit (Safari/Chrome) in yet some areas.

Some browsers implement other cool new technologies that are not HTML5, but often get lumped in with HTML5: Geolocation, web workers, (parts of) SVG, XHR, etc.

Since H.264 is a format that is not free to use, I hope Mozilla never will cave in and start supporting it. The web should have open formats.

This will be an interesting one to follow. Today much of this rich content is using flash which is far from open either, and IMHO on platforms where it is available is very poor in terms of acceleration.

HTML5 suggests a more open standard, yet H264 which YouTube are using is surrounded by licensing issues too.

Google and apple seem onboard with H264, and with very broad coverage this could make it tricky for firefox/maemo to continue with the insistance that H264 is not appropriate due to the licensing issues....
