You'll open a box of worms with that post : )

The actual answer is "No" - you could use a bunch of coat hangars joined together and wedged in to the back of your TV and it'd still work as good as if you bought the $400 titanium core, diamond encrusted monster cables.

Here's my 2c concerning the Nokia Video-out cable.

I have some neat video goggles with av-in. Never got them to work with anything other than the default n900 video cable. The Input for the goggles is the same 3-channel RCA jack as the n900. I even have a cute 10cm direct-link cable with two RCA plugs - a perfect match. Yet it doesn't work.

One day, I was so frustrated that I grabbed my multimeter and checked ALL the RCA cables that I had, just to find out that they ALL had a different pinout.

The ONLY plug that used the standard pinout you would expect (audio connectors on the tip, 3rd ring added for video), was the Nokia cable.

Every other 3.5mm rca cable that I found in my stash had a different pinout. Even better, the 10cm direct-link cable that came with the video goggles had a different pinout on every side!

Bottom Line: finding 3.5mm cables that work with the N900 is pure luck. Nokia sticks perfectly to the standards. Most other manufacturers DON'T.

Thanks for all that testing. i will performe some tests of the Sony cable to see if I can just make up for the differences while pluging it in the TV (example: insert red channel in video channel, etc).

i have noticed the end of the jack on the nokia is longer than the ipod cable so if i only put the cable in so far till it work on 1 of the audio channels i atleast get video altho doesnt work all the time will just invest in rca cords i think
