voice/video chat in gtalk was working in PR 1.1 but now it is either broken or removed deliberately in PR 1.2. same case with msn voice/video chat. may be ppl who are still using PR 1.1 can receive google voice calls in their gtalk.

People, I think some of you are a little confused. And understandably so; this stuff is somewhat complex.

Video call placing and receiving is working very well on an n900 with PR 1.2. That's not the issue. The issue is all about Google voice. Google voice is a very serious piece of network technology. Google will give you a public switched telephone network (PSTN) number that can be used to route between other PSTN numbers, SIP and XMPP. This is a big deal.

But something isn't working right at the moment. Either Google has created a slight inconsistency, or there's a small problem with one of Maemo's telepathy plugins or the phone app.

I have three phones setup for Google Voice account B:

cell phone [inactive]
SIP account [inactive]
Google Talk [active]

Google Talk account B is online and active on my 900. When using Pidgin, I deactivate this and use Pidgin's presence activation instead.

Here's what's strange:

From Google Talk account A using desktop gmail, I can initiate a video call with Google Talk account B and have a successful video chat using the n900 phone application.

From Google Talk account A using desktop gmail, I cannot initiate a video call with account B's PSTN number with the n900 phone application.

From Google Talk account A using desktop gmail, I can initiate a video call with account B's PSTN number with the n900 Pidgin application, I just can't do anything after I accept the call.

So the question is, why does the call going through Google Voice look different to the n900 phone application than the call coming from Google Talk? Initially, there's certainly different routing involved, but by the time it gets to the n900? There should be a small, easy fix by someone. But by who? Possibly someone in this community.

I'm hoping Google will expand the Google Voice API to include this functionality.
Google Voice API? What Google Voice API?

*grumbles*

Woops, there is a difference when initiating the two calls I described above. A PSTN call from the desktop gmail call widget is a voice-only call. Google talk presence musn't be enough to notify Google voice that I'm online. Monitoring dbus system and session is just silent in that scenario.

Like an earlier poster, in Pidgin I'm using an XMPP account configuration. That code needs to be looked at for a possible telepathy plugin fix. The default jabber plugin should work, but I have yet to successfully sign in to a Google server. Someone with more knowledge should be able to produce a configuration or code fix in less than a day. I only have the next half hour.

At first there were no responses and I was disappointed, just checked the forum and wow 2 pages. Thank you for your comments.

This was the 1st thing I tried after setting up the phone again. The 1st call didn't work, the 2nd one didn't work, the 3rd call I got a popup saying someone is trying to initiate a call with me and I accepted but couldn't hear anything.

I noticed that a buddy was added to my Gtalk list which was gtalk2voip www.gtalk2voip.com and I was getting IMs after the call was done stating the call cost me $0.00. I searched for it and found their website and it said they are not affiliated with google so I deleted the buddy from my list.

I have since switched to skype, I got a skype in number and added to Google voice, and changed my caller ID in skype to my google voice number. It seems to be working well for the past 2 days.

I ran into a voicemail issue (skype was accepting voicemails instead of GV) so I am leaving skype open on my computer, turned off voicemail feature in the application (mac) and after a few tries looks like GV is back as my voicemail provider. I think the problem was that skype was sending calls to VM faster than GV is and with skype open on my computer I am not running into this problem. I have a skype subscription $2.99 a month for US and Canada.

I have 2 hindrances that make me hesitant about using my N900 as a main phone.

#1: Can't make skype the default call out option. Maybe there's a hack for it or am I missing something? My nexus one seems to be able to handle this very well with GV app.

#2: My skype calls are not routed through my cars speakers, even though the phone shows headset in the call screen, my car doesn't even see a call being placed or is active and keeps playing music. With a regular call my cars display shows the number and length of the call and pauses all music playing and I hear and speak through the phone. I have a 2007 650i.

As a reminded, I am using a VZ MiFi with a 5GB plan and there is no SIM card in the phone. Also my battery is getting drained half way throughout the day. Is WiFi and skype causing this or something else wrong? I can't charge my phone twice a day.

PS: Different topic and haven't found a solution; the search in the forum is horrible. Is there a way to log in to 1 IM and SIP account? IE: Leave skype logged in but log out of yahoo, IM, facebook, google voice?

How did you manage that? I have tried again and again to set my Google Voice number as my Skype caller ID - It needs Skype to send GV a text message - and its known that this doesn't work.

Good hack - I can afford to keep Skype running permanently on one of my machines.

Known issue. iirc, this is a "wontfix" - I think I read that it was for being able to do 911 calls.

Turn of your GSM radio, use Conky and powertop to identify your troublemakers. Also Keeping IMs on all the time will eat into your battery.

Select your yahoo account in "My availability", uncheck "Enabled" and Save. Do for all those you don't want online.

I have multiple buttons setup

- Skype - only turns on Skype
- GVoice - Logs me into Google Voice and also Gizmo 5
- IM - Logs me onto Google Talk and AIM

These are my combos but you can create buttons for any combo you want.

BTW, I bought a Gizmo 5 SIP account from eBay for like $8 and it does the same as Skype. Voice quality is ok, there's a bit of a delay, but not much worse than Skype.

@uvatbc:I have no idea how to do a quote so I'll just answer your questions as 1,2,3,4

1. Google Voice is now allowing incoming SMS from Skype, I got 1 SMS with the code and another 1 24 hours after saying it would be active in 2 hours.

2. So far it's a good solution, haven't had any issues yet.

3. That is unfortunate, maybe a developer would be kind enough to make a hack for it.

4. How do I turn off my GSM radio? Didn't see an option for it.

5. The account I want to log off is yahoo, and I don't want to disable it because all my pictures for the contacts disappear. Is it a bug or is it just my phone?

I have a gizmo5 account and the reason I didn't opt for it is because I can't change the caller ID and I need my callers to see my caller ID instead of a private number, otherwise they won't pick up.

This is why I was trying to see if Gtalk would work because google voice has a setting to show GV caller ID when numbers are called from Gtalk.
