And what happens on the N900 when you try do this?
IIRC you're supposed to get a usb icon on the screen indicating it's waiting for flasher.
Alternatively do the other method:
* Cables disconnected, N900 off.
* Remove battery from N900.
* Start flasher on PC
* Insert cable
* insert battery
